About VESPIIA — Australia's professional body for first responder industries
About VESPIIA

The national professional body for first responder industries

VESPIIA connects and supports the practitioners, organisations and researchers who work alongside Australia's veterans, emergency services and police — the people behind the people who serve.

Who we are
We exist for the organisations and professionals that stand behind Australia's service communities.

Not the frontline itself — the staff, volunteers, researchers and service providers who keep the system running. The people who support veterans through transition. The mental health practitioners embedded in fire services. The researchers working to improve outcomes for police families. The NFPs navigating funding cycles to deliver critical programs.

These people and organisations have rarely had a peak body of their own. VESPIIA was built to change that.

VESPIIA is Australia's first professional body dedicated to the organisations and professionals who support our service communities.
A national not-for-profit public company limited by guarantee, registered with the ACNC. ACN 672 324 546.

The problem we solve
A sector doing critical work, without unified professional infrastructure

Australia's veteran and first responder ecosystem spans thousands of organisations, service providers, researchers and volunteers operating across federal, state and community systems.

Despite the scale, the sector has historically lacked unified professional representation, structured national coordination and shared infrastructure for policy, capability and reform discussions.

Public inquiries and government reviews have repeatedly identified the same gaps. VESPIIA exists to close them.

  • No peak body representing organisations working within the sector — only those serving veterans or first responders directly
  • Fragmented representation in policy and reform processes
  • Limited cross-sector visibility between veterans, emergency services, police and corrections
  • Inconsistent professional standards and no shared ethical framework
  • Duplication of effort across organisations facing identical challenges
  • Under-resourced organisations with no shared development infrastructure
What we do
Four pillars of work
Our work is structured around the things members consistently tell us they need most — representation, connection, research and professional development.
Advocacy & representation
Submissions, roundtables and a structured national voice in policy and reform processes. VESPIIA represents the sector in public consultations and parliamentary inquiries.
Research & sector insight
The Future Frontlines series — evidence-based papers informing national policy. Plus sector mapping, data visibility and access to research that practitioners can actually use.
Professional standards
A Code of Professional Conduct, CPD framework and ethical practice guidelines. Membership signals a commitment to accountable, professional practice.
Cross-sector connection
Events, webinars and a national network spanning defence, fire, ambulance, police, corrections and research. The sector talking to itself, not past itself.

Acknowledgement of Country
Proudly founded on Wadjuk Noongar land

VESPIIA was founded on Wadjuk Noongar land, and we pay our respects to Elders past, present and emerging. We acknowledge the Traditional Owners of the lands across Australia on which we work, and recognise their enduring connection to country, culture and community.

We are committed to walking alongside First Nations peoples and communities, and to ensuring our work is inclusive, respectful and reflective of all Australians who serve and support others.

Our commitment
An inclusive professional body for everyone who serves

VESPIIA is committed to equity, diversity and inclusion across everything we do. We believe that the strength of our sector depends on every person — regardless of background, identity, gender, sexuality, culture or belief — having a genuine place within it.

We stand with the women, First Nations peoples, LGBTQIA+ individuals, and people from all cultural communities who serve Australia's veterans, emergency services and police. That commitment is not a policy position. It is who we are.
